Federal officials request help from the public in an ongoing investigation into a Virginia man indicted for sexually exploiting a Michigan girl in 2012.

A grand jury recently charged Erich Zeeb, 49, of Roanoke, Virginia, with three counts of sexual exploitation of a child, United States Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten announced Friday. Each count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum sentence of 30 years, according to a press release.

“We’re prepared to make our case as part of our ongoing mission to protect children and teenagers from sexual exploitation,” Totten said in the Friday release. “As part of our work to ensure justice and protect victims, I strongly encourage anyone with information about this matter or related criminal acts committed by Erich Zeeb to contact our office.”

The indictment, which was unsealed Friday, alleged that on multiple occasions, Zeeb “employed, used, persuaded, induced, enticed and coerced” a 15-year-old to engage in sexually explicit conduct to film it and take photos. The indictment alleged that the conduct occurred in July 2012 in Marquette County.

Totten’s office and Homeland Security Investigations continue to investigate Zeeb.

“Protecting children from crimes of exploitation is a top priority for Homeland Security Investigations in Michigan, around the country and across the world,” Homeland Security Investigations Detroit acting Special Agent in Charge Jared Murphey said in the release.

“I encourage anyone with information to reach out to law enforcement,” Murphey continued.

Zeeb previously lived in Houston, Texas, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. He may have communicated using the following email addresses:

He may also have communicated via social media, including Instagram and Facebook, and dating apps, including WhosHere, Plenty of Fish and Tinder.

Authorities urged in the Friday release that anyone who may be a victim or has information about Zeeb call the Marquette Branch Office of Totten’s office at (906) 226-2500.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative to protect kids from online exploitation and abuse. Groups involved in Project Safe Childhood are the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan; county prosecutor’s offices; Homeland Security Investigations; Michigan State Police’s Internet Crimes Against Children task force; the West Michigan Based Child Exploitation Task Force (WEBCHEX); and federal, state and local law enforcement.
